StBK Stålbyggnadskontroll is owned by Dr Göran Alpsten, who has devoted 40 years to various activities related to steel structures. Göran Alpsten graduated from the Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm with a MS in Civil Engineering in 1964 and a PhD in Structural Engineering in 1970. He has also made additional studies in the field of material science and welding technology.

At his first employment at the "Försvarets Materielverk" in Stockholm in 1964 to 1965 Göran Alpsten participated in structural design of military bridge components in steel and aluminum, and he had unique possibilities to study how real structures in full scale perform at realistic loading tests.

Göran Alpsten has conducted research at the Department of Structural Engineering and Bridge Building at the Royal Institute of Technology in 1965 to 1967 and at Lehigh University in USA in 1967 to 1969, where he acted as Codirector for a research group investigating residual stresses in welded steel components and their effects on column buckling. For this research he was awarded the A.F. Davis Silver Medal Award from American Welding Society for the paper "which has contributed most to the progress of welding in the field of structural design 1970".

In 1969 to 1973 Göran Alpsten acted as Associate Director at the Swedish Institute of Steel Construction SBI in Stockholm, responsible for research and development. Since 1973 he has acted as a consultant in his own firm StBK Stalbyggnadskontroll.

Since 1993 Göran Alpsten is a certified "Professional Quality Assurance Lead Auditor".

Göran Alpsten has been awarded the Oscar Kjellberg Gold Medal, the most prestigous prize of the Swedish Welding Commission, for "great contributions for a better understanding of fatigue design and for increased knowledge about fatigue of welded structures". The medal has since 1941 been awarded to about ten recipients.
